It's not easy. To surrender is not easy. To surrender to God is telling God that you don't want to be in charge and run things your way, but be conformed to His way, and that is not easy to do. I want you to think about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Can you imagine how scared He was? He knew what was coming - pain, suffering, feeling alone, rejection, even betrayal. I'm sharing Mark 14:35-36 (Passion Translation) with you: "He walked a short distance away, and being overcome with grief, he threw Himself facedown on the ground. He prayed that if it were possible, he would not have to experience this hour of suffering. He prayed, "Abba, my Father, all things are possible for You. Please - remove this cup of suffering! Yet what I want is not important, for I only desire to fulfill your plan for me."
Do you see what true surrender is? Jesus is our example of what it means to really let go and let God help us. I love quoting the verse in James 4:7 where it says that when we submit ourselves to God and resist the devil, he WILL flee from us! That sounds like a promise to me! But the key is to submit and surrender. And that's the part we struggle with.
But when you realize and understand what happens when you do surrender to God, you wouldn't feel that you're giving yourself away. Because Jesus chose to pray what He did, He had the strength, wisdom and character to go through what He had to and today, anyone that accepts His work on the Cross can spend eternity with Him! If Jesus followed His desires and emotion, you and I would not be here today and there would be no Heaven for us to go to when we die!
When we put God in control, we will have peace, our paths will be directed by Him, the One who had already worked out our life plan to perfection! We interfere too much. We don't trust our Father enough. We like to pray it and perhaps even sing it in a song, but how many of us truly surrender to God?
In Matthew 11:28 Jesus gives one of the most beautiful invitations in the Bible: Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
I don't know what you're facing now, and I don't know what you've been going through. But what I do know, is that when we surrender everything we are, everything we face, every fear we have to Him, He will never forsake us nor disappoint us. He will always come through at the end.
Please pray with me now this prayer of surrender:
Jesus, thank You that You surrendered everything for me. Now I want to do the same. I want to surrender myself, my thoughts, my fears, my situation, my family, my marriage, everything. Please take charge Lord Jesus! I need Your peace to guide me now. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.
