When reading the Old Testament, it’s best to view it through the New Testament. What do I mean by that? Many of the Old Testament patriarchs and events that took place were a type or shadow of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Exodus 39: 6-14 “They made the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold filigree, and engraved like the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the sons of Israel. And he set them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod to be stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, as the Lord had commanded Moses. He made the breastpiece, in skilled work, in the style of the ephod, of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen. There were twelve stones with their names according to the names of the sons of Israel. They were like signets, each engraved with its name, for the twelve tribes.”
So, what is the significance of this? We must remember that our God does nothing “by the way”, but everything He does serves a purpose.
Firstly, God was already showing us in the Old Testament, by engraving the names of the sons of Israel on these precious and costly materials, just how precious we, His covenant children, are to Him. In other words, it was God’s way of saying, “I’m using these precious metals and stones as a symbol to show you how dear you are to Me.”
Secondly, take note of the wonderful positioning of the names of the sons of Israel. They were placed on the high priests’ shoulders and on the Ephod which was placed on the breastplate by his heart. Now, in Christ Jesus, as we are sons and daughters part of the Spiritual Israel, in covenant with God, we can take heart knowing without a shadow of a doubt, that Jesus is continually carrying us on His shoulders and we’re always on His heart!
Wow! What a Savior we have to worship! What great love God has for us!!
The difficulties and hardships we face in this world want to tell us that we are not going to make it and that God has forsaken us. But this is not the truth!
No matter how bad your situation is, never forget and take courage whether you feel His presence or not, Jesus Christ, our beloved Savior, Healer, Deliverer & Provider is always carrying you on His shoulders because you’re most precious in His heart!
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, bring Your great love for us to remembrance every time we feel down or overwhelmed by our situations, knowing that You are carrying us through our difficulties because we’re always in Your heart in Jesus Name, Amen.
