Our Heavenly Father corrects us. Which no one likes to experience, but it's indeed very, very necessary! This is something the Holy Spirit brought my attention to, something I had to work on and change in my life. When the Bible tells us to be weary of certain things, it's not to spite us, but to save us! Therefore, when the Bible says:
- "never avenge yourselves" (Rom 12:17-19)
- "do not give the devil an opportunity to lead you into sin by holding a grudge" (Eph 4:27)
- "a shortsighted fool always loses his temper and displays his anger, but a wise man uses self-control" (Prov 29:11)
When the Bible tells us these things, it's not take the fun out of life, it's to protect us against the devil getting access to us and destroying our lives! We all get done wrong: treated unfairly, misjudged, accused of things we didn't do, gossiped about, and perhaps you have every reason to be furious, however, when we engage in nurturing that anger, we react in a way (spitefulness) that is not becoming of a child of God - not only that - but you open yourself up to attack.
The meaning of the word "spitefulness" very much describes the opposite of the character of Jesus - "wanting to upset or hurt another person because you feel angry towards them". Jesus never did that! Jesus will never do that! No matter how He was treated, He never acted in spitefulness. Spitefulness is the character of satan! satan wants to upset and hurt us.
When the Holy Spirit brought my attention to this, He showed me that every time I react in spitefulness, it doesn't only affect me, but those around me too! It affects your marriage, your actions, your behavior, your decision-making, your family! How can we make sound decisions, hear God clearly, when we allow this emotion to control our behavior? We open ourselves up to destruction when we act this way. I had to forgive and empty out my heart from any unforgiveness and anger. I suggest you do the same today. Give whatever anger you have right now, to Jesus. Rid of it! Spite is not worth it!
After I repented, after I asked the Holy Spirit to remove this anger, I could now focus on the renewing of my mind. Remember, you may have been reacting with spitefulness for a very long time, just like I did. You now need to form new habits, new ways of reacting. Ask the Holy Spirit now to renew your mind and not allow spitefulness to be your automatic response to offense. It truly is a trap of satan.
Holy Spirit, remove all anger, unforgiveness and bitterness from me. I don't want to give satan access. Please renew my mind and help me to not react with spite anymore towards others. You will fight for me, You will make it right. In Jesus Name, Amen
